- 3. Eat cruciferous vegetables—cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, rutabagas and turnips. These are
- good sources of the indoles (natural cancer-prevention substances) and fiber that help reduce the risk of
- several cancers, especially colon cancer.
- 4. Reduce your consumption of smoked or charcoal-broiled foods. Before you begin cooking on the barbecue,
- first microwave meat for a few minutes and pour off the accumulated juices. This will decrease carcinogen
- exposure.
- 5. Drink moderate amounts of alcoholic beverages if you drink any at all. Ideally, you should have less than one
- drink or 125 mL (4 oz.) of wine per day.
- 6. Reduce your consumption of red meats, animal fats and tropical oils such as palm and coconut.
- 7. Keep physically trim and fit to avoid being overweight. This helps prevent cancer by reducing excesses of
- hormones that may promote cancer growth. It is as important to exercise as it is to maintain good nutrition.
- Even moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, helps to burn fat, make muscles firm and reduce fat bulges. Of
- course, exercise is also good for the heart!

- 2. Limit your alcohol intake to one drink a day or less.
- 3. Don't drink and smoke at the same time. This combination increases the chance for head and neck cancers by
- about 50 times.
